Coalbed Methane Research and Field Application
  • MET is collaborating with the Center for Biofilm Engineering (CBE) and the Energy Research Institute (ERI) at Montana State University (MSU) and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) on several coalbed methane projects
  • The CBE and the USGS are developing microbial enhanced coal bed methane (MECBM) technology
  • MECBM consists of enhancing the natural processes (methanogenesis) by which microorganisms produce methane or natural gas from coal. The MSU process uses injection of natural amendments to stimulate the indigenous populations of methanogen.
  • As part of these efforts, MET is assisting MSU with:
    • Design and fabrication of bench-scale methanogenesis reactors
    • Design of surface facilities for a field application
    • MECBM economic analysis.
